Functions & Duties

Functions :

  Ó To provide and maintain maritime services within surrounding waters of ports.
  Ó To monitor the safety of navigation of ships within Brunei Darussalam waters.
  Ó To provide and maintain navigational aids for the safety of navigation.
  Ó To dredge and maintain surrounding waters of Ports.
  Ó To establish Maritime Transportation.
  Ó To monitor and prevent marine pollution within waters of  Brunei Darussalam.


Duties

The Marine Department's main duty is as a regulatory agency on maritime affairs for Brunei Darussalam working under the reference of the Ports Act (144), the Merchant Shipping Act (1445),the International Maritime Laws and Regulations specifically related to IMO Conventions and its Protocols. Other than enforcement, Marine Department provides :

 
Ó Pilotage and Tug services.
Ó Ship Safety equipment Survey.
Ó Issuance of Seaman Book and notification of 'Signing On and Off.'
Ó Rental of the Department Ships.
Ó Provision of Maritime advises.
Ó Dredging services.
Ó Maritime Communications.
Ó Monitoring of entrance channel and main shipping routes.
Ó Search and Rescue operations
Ó Oilspill action and prevention operations.
Ó Providing navigational aids.
Ó Registration of ships.
Ó Licensing of small crafts and vessels.
Ó Conducting courses on certification of Marine Engineers and Marine Officers.
Ó Issuance letter for 'Sailing Clearance'.
Ó Hydrographic Survey.
Ó Issuance of sand mining permit.
