Main Functions

Functions :

    To ensure and maintain the safety of navigation within the waters of Brunei Darussalam.
    To ensure compliance with international and local safety and marine environmental protection standards
    To administer and develop standards and legislation inline with international conventions.
    To ensure compliance with international and local requirement on the competency of seafarers.
   
   
   

Duties

The Marine Department's main duty is to regulate on maritime affairs for Brunei Darussalam working under the reference of the Merchant Shipping Order 2002, the Prevention of Pollution of the Sea Order 2005, Maritime Offences Order 2007 and the Ports Act (Ch. 144). Marine Department duties also includes the following :

 
Ó Registration of ships.
Ó Inspections and Licensing of small crafts and vessels.
Ó Ship Safety Equipment Survey.
Ó Issuance of Import permit.
Ó Provision of Maritime advises.
Ó Dredging services.
Ó Maritime Communications.
Ó Monitoring of entrance channel and main shipping routes.
Ó Facilitate Search and Rescue operations
Ó Oilspill action and prevention operations.
Ó Providing navigational aids.
Ó Issuance of Seaman Book and notification of 'Signing On and Off.'
Ó  
Ó Conducting courses on certification of Marine Engineers and Marine Officers.
Ó Issuance letter for 'Sailing Clearance'.
Ó  
Ó Issuance of sand mining permit.
